For the 98th Academy Awards, The Academy’s social team approached The Flash Pack with an open brief. The challenge was to create a new backstage capture moment for Oscar winners that could generate social media content while also producing official imagery for the Academy archives.
Our response was the Oscars Photo Booth Moment. A bespoke Academy Awards photo booth designed and fabricated specifically for the backstage environment.
Encouraging participation from Oscar winners was a key consideration. Backstage at the Oscars moves quickly, with winners stepping off stage and moving directly into press and media interviews. The experience needed to feel intuitive and inviting while still producing distinctive content for the Academy’s global audience.
We designed and built a standing Oscars photo booth finished in gold leaf and engineered to feel permanent and prestigious. The booth centres around a large two way mirror concealing a multi camera capture system.
Inside the booth, Oscar winners create a classic four frame photo booth sequence with their statuette. At the same time, additional cameras capture candid video moments inside the booth, revealing the celebration and reactions behind the win.
Further cameras positioned outside the booth capture winners approaching and leaving the experience. This allows the Academy’s social team to combine photo booth imagery with backstage footage and produce social ready edits moments after each award.
Alongside social content capture, the system also records full body still photography to create the official archival portraits of each winner.
To accommodate evening gowns and formal wear, the booth was designed as a standing format. Our capture system records full resolution imagery and automatically reframes each session to maintain the classic photo booth composition regardless of guest height.
The result is an Oscars photo booth experience that produces video, social content and archival photography in a single backstage moment at the Academy Awards.
